Futuristic cranks for racing bicycles

The bicycle has been studied and modified during the years by inventors and researchers in order to succeed in reducing the effort of the cyclist thanks to devices and amendments of any kind. The device we are now going to describe is certainly the most appropriate and ingenious one you’ve never seen. The patent at issue is based on the simple concept of extending the lever. Mr. Sergio Doni has indeed proven that it’s possible to develop more power and consequently more propulsion, by succeeding in getting a greater drive than the one produced by a standard lever 17.00/17.50. In order to manufacture this futuristic accessory, he has used a common unidirectional device said “FREE WHEEL” fixed to a crank (fast binding). The innovation of this device consists of the initial phase of the pedal movement (about 12 cm): as a matter of fact, the so-called unidirectional “FREE WHEEL” prevent the crank from normally rotating forward around the central pivot, blocking it. Consequently, the cyclist’s foot presses on the frontal part of the fast binding, moving the driving axis 2.5 cm forwards. Then, the cyclist goes on pedalling regularly without any other effect. Accurate tests have proven all that involves an increase of lever and consequently of propulsion. This system has also another advantage: it stops the cyclist’s foot on the crank without losing the power (as in the case of shakes) and uses the maximum propulsion in the crucial moments, as standing start for races on tracks. Particularly, it helps during climbs, because when the cyclist stands up on the cranks, moving his body weight on them, he gets more propulsion. This new type of crank, if manufactured at industrial level and with suitable materials, involves a low increase of weight. These photos show the prototype, which perfectly works with all the elements above-mentioned. It’s even possible to improve it from an aesthetic point of view, so as not to differ the shape of a normal fast binding.
