The "StepBike"

The "StepBike"

As it is well known, the traditional central mechanism that permit the movement of a bike is composed by a central rod connected with the crown gear, the pedal-cranks and the pedals. This mechanism has never been subject to substantial improvements or modifications since its original design. However it has some considerable disadvantages. First of all the length of pedal cranks shall be limited in order to allow cyclist to produce a positive movement under bio-mechanical view-point, and to avoid interference with the ground. Therefore the transmissible torque to the wheel, which is directly proportional to the pedal-crank length with the same force applied, results limited too. In addition to the above, in order to have the maximum result, the cyclist’s legs are obliged to perform wide extension movements. One of the main purposes of the step bike is to have pedal-cranks longer than that ones normally provided on standard bikes. This is in order to have an higher torque transmitted to the wheels with same force applied on pedals. An other important advantage is that with the step-bike the legs extension movement is limited in respect of a standard bike. The above advantages of the step-bike are obtained by a special central movement. It is still composed by a central rod which is free to rotate in respect to the bike frame. At the ends of this rod there are still connected the couple of pedal-cranks which transmit the torque to the crown gear. But differently from a standard bike where the torque is transmitted by the rotation of the pedal-cranks, in the step-bike the pedal-cranks are connected to the central rod by ratchet gear. Therefore the pedal-cranks have only an angular movement between the starting and the end points (and not a complete turn). The special central movement is designed to have the central rod rotation in one direction only, in order to produce the movement of the bike. Do you want to know more?
